3 dead, 2 injured after shooting at Airbnb in Toronto, police not looking for suspects
Three men are dead and two men are injured after a shooting at a rented Airbnb in a downtown Toronto condo building on Friday night, police say.
The shooting happened in a unit on the 32nd floor of a condo on Queens Wharf Road, near Bathurst Street and Fort York Boulevard. Police received several 911 calls at 10:21 p.m. for the sound of gunshots.
Acting Det.-Sgt. Henri Marsman, spokesperson for the Toronto police’s homicide squad, said the men who died are aged 22, 20 and 19.
Marsman said police are not looking for a suspect. No arrests have been made. He declined to say if the suspect is dead.
«There are no outstanding suspects at this time,» Marsman told reporters near the scene on Saturday. «Our investigation has led us to believe right now that we have all parties involved.»
When police arrived at the scene, they found two men who had died of gunshot wounds. A third man was taken to hospital in an emergency run and he died in hospital later.
A fourth man, 20, was taken to hospital with serious gunshot wounds. The fifth man sustained a minor cut. Four people in all were shot.
Marsman said there was a party in the unit, but police do not know what led up to the shooting.
Officers have interviewed a number of witnesses and are continuing to canvas the building for security camera video. Police are also continuing to identify the dead and notify next of kin.
Marsman said the fifth person injured is co-operating with police and officers are trying to contact the owner of the unit.
He added police have taken «all reasonable steps» to ensure the safety of people who live in the building. «The risk to public safety is not there.»
Police chief went to the scene himself
Earlier on Saturday, Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders went to the scene to talk to reporters.
«We’re actively looking for witnesses to help us figure out who was responsible for this particular homicide,» Saunders said.
Saunders said the crime scene included a number of floors.
«What we have right now, on a preliminary component of the investigation, is in fact that the shots fired were inside this complex… I can tell you that multiple floors are involved. We found people on other floors,» Saunders said.
Saunders said he came to the scene himself because of the seriousness of the situation.
«Well, first and foremost, anytime there’s a loss of life, it is a concern, not just to the Toronto Police Service, but also to members of the community,» Saunders said.
«I wanted to make sure that the adequate resources were, in fact, here and I wanted to make sure that we were taking all the steps necessary to resolve this investigation to the best of our ability,» he added.
«Anytime that there is gunplay, it does concern me.»
Homicide detectives have taken over the investigation. Detectives have not released the names of the men who died.
Residents say shooting ‘obviously upsetting’
Allison Walker and David Olevson, who live and work in the area, said they were shocked to hear about the shooting. The couple were in an Uber on the way to the area where it happened when they heard the news.
«It’s shocking. It’s obviously upsetting to hear that. You don’t want to hear something like that. You would hope that it would be a safe area to live in,» Walker said.
Olevson added: «Of course, it really touches very close to home. It’s very concerning. You see these kinds of issues coming up from Airbnb, where it’s people that are not regular residents of where you live and are causing violence, and it’s not good for us.»
Coun. Joe Cressy, who represents Ward 10 Spadina-Fort York, called the shooting an «absolutely brutal and traumatic incident» for Toronto’s CityPlace neighbourhood. He said the city has launched its community crisis response program for residents who live in the area.
At the condo early Saturday, a Toronto police forensic identification services vehicle was parked outside. Police officers were seen talking to the concierge.
Anyone who saw or heard anything is urged to call police.
